About
This suite of seven contrasting movements draws inspiration from the Russian folk-legend The Sea King’s Daughter, portraying the adventures of the hero Sadko. His zither playing wins the favour of the mighty Sea King, leading to journeys across stormy seas, encounters at the undersea palace, and finally a joyful return to Novgorod.
A distinctive feature of this edition is the inclusion of a poetic narration by David Nutt, designed to be read aloud before each movement. This optional performance element adds a captivating storytelling dimension, enriching the musical experience for audiences.
The work is written for solo guitar (standard tuning, with use of a 20th fret), and offers expressive contrasts from lyrical song to stormy dance. While tone colour, dynamics and expression are suggested, performers are encouraged to explore their own interpretation.
Special thanks are due to American author Aaron Shepard, whose retelling of the folk-legend provided inspiration for the compositions.
