Sea Shanty for solo guitar was inspired by the epic voyages of Allan Kerr Taylor, founder of Auckland’s historic house Alberton. The piece evokes the excitement, hardships, and triumphs of 19th-century sea journeys, drawing on Allan’s own letters from aboard the Duke of Portland in 1848. Energetic outer sections recall the drama of the open sea, while the calm middle passage reflects his account of a stifling, becalmed ship. The work also nods to a later voyage where Allan famously danced a jig while stranded on Pitcairn Island. Duration: approx. 4’30” | Tuning: 6th string to D, 5th to G.
