Solo guitar piece inspired by the sparkling waters of Auckland's Waitemata Harbour.
About
Waitemata Reverie is a substantial single-movement work for solo classical guitar by New Zealand composer Bruce Paine. The piece draws inspiration from the composer’s memories and experiences of Auckland’s Waitematā Harbour, renowned for its sparkling waters, sheltered bays, and surrounding islands.
The composition also serves as a tribute to the New Zealand servicemen and women who departed from these shores by steamship during the wars of the 20th century. Further inspiration came from the New Zealand folk song Rangitoto Farewell, composed by Stan H. Wood, a World War One veteran. The opening notes of that song helped form the basis of this work, while its expressive qualities were influenced by the imagery within the lyrics.
