New Zealand Guitar Quartet – The Passing of a Black Star
Finalist – 2018 Best Classical Artist, New Zealand Music Awards
This critically acclaimed 2017 Rattle Records release showcases the New Zealand Guitar Quartet’s rich musicality and distinctive voice. The album features a vibrant blend of traditional and contemporary works, from a spirited arrangement of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 to the evocative Onslow Suite by Craig Utting, and the powerful title track by Slovakian-born composer Marián Budoŝ — a tribute to David Bowie’s final album, Blackstar.
Also included is the premiere recording of Bruce Paine’s Aotearoa Suite, a six-part composition inspired by the land and spirit of New Zealand. Drawing on jazz, folk, and classical influences, the work offers a contemporary homage to Baroque form and counterpoint.
“This magnificent album proves without a doubt that [NZGQ] are now masters of their own destiny and in the top echelon of ensembles.”
– Classical Guitar Magazine
