About the Album
Gunter Herbig, an internationally acclaimed guitarist born in Brazil and raised in Portugal and Germany, brings a uniquely expressive style to this second volume of New Zealand guitar works. His playing blends Brazilian warmth, Portuguese passion, and German precision — a distinctive combination that has earned him a loyal following and critical praise worldwide.
In this album, Herbig continues his exploration of New Zealand’s vibrant guitar repertoire, with works that embrace lyrical, mystical, and dance-like elements. Bruce Paine’s contributions reflect these qualities with sensitivity and nuance, while other featured composers — including David Farquhar, John Elmsly and John Rimmer — offer contrasting colours and moods. Herbig’s personal, intuitive approach to interpretation strengthens the connection between composer, performer, and audience.
The album embraces a broad emotional and sonic range — from lyrical and dance-like to abstract and exploratory. While some works, such as John Rimmer’s evocative Rotoiti, push expressive and acoustic boundaries, they do so with a clear artistic purpose, offering a thought-provoking experience that challenges conventional expectations of the classical guitar. Not all tracks are ‘easy listening’ — and that’s deliberate. The album invites listeners to engage with the guitar as a vehicle for both beauty and bold experimentation.
A longtime champion of New Zealand music, Herbig also led the guitar departments at the University of Auckland for over two decades and served as Head of Chamber Music at the New Zealand School of Music in Wellington.
